The process of Image Slicing is separating the image into individual parts and compressing each piece separately. This allows for maintained quality of the image or text, reduced file size, and lets the image load in pieces rather than trying to load all at once which gives the impression of slower download speed. Image Slicing also makes it possible to take an image and create different points that can be moused over to make selections. Pretty nifty! Basically the image is disassembled like a puzzle, each piece can then be given a function be it simply text or image or a selection point, optimally compressed, and then sent as parts to the server and reassembled.
