What does it mean for you?
Unlike unemployed friends and relatives, who can eat all your food and live in your home much longer than you'd like, you do not have to let military personnel take up residence without your consent during peace time. During wartime, you may be asked to house a soldier, but only according to the law. While this amendment is basically unused in our contemporary culture, it was inserted into the Constitution to prevent billeting of soldiers, which was commonly practiced by the British in Colonial times.
