MILESTONES IN THE HISTORY OF THE WEB
Starting point
I'd say the web actually started in 1957 in the Soviet Union with the launching of the Sputnik satellite. This was the earliest stage of the internet, which can be defined as a network of interconnected networks that share information through Internet Protocol. The original term for the Internet was "ARPANET," which stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network.
The development of the Internet came about for the following reasons:
- Technology to use with satellites
- Communications within the Department of Defense
- A way to store information that will survive a nuclear attack
- A way for Universities to connect
Most important breakthrough
The thing that really made the World Wide Web workable was dial-up telephone lines. In 1962, J.C.R Licklider was the first to develop a network of computers capable of using ARAPNET. The communications through this network were put to use in December of 1969 when four computers in major universities went online using the dial-up method of connectivity. The Internet continued to develop after that point. Some examples of emerging Internet providers included:
- BITNET in 1981
- NSFNet of 1986
- Netscape of 1993
- And the first version of Microsoft Internet explorer of 1995, which most of us are familiar with
Most important person
The person who contributed most the Web as we know it was J.C.R Licklider of MIT because he was the first to connect public users to the internet.

Modern day Internet
There are many attributes of the Internet that make it a very useful in modern day activities.
These attributes include:
- Communication via:
- E-mail
- Blogging
- Chat rooms
- Forums
- Access to unlimited information
- Search engines minimizing the time it takes to find information
- Fast consumer and business transactions
- The ability of self-expression
The Internet has truly changed the lives of many by providing these various resources. Of course, each website is designed by an individual, or team of individuals. This fact allows websites to range from very personal to informal/business, based on market structures or the producer’s intentions.
