Elaine Dowling believes in “art for life” – which is why a portion of the purchase price of her paintings is donated for cancer research.
“Art is often described as being life-affirming and healing. I believe that philosophy can be taken a step further, so that the work I enjoy creating – and which I hope others enjoy viewing – can actually help save lives,” she says.
Elaine began her art training in 1994 at Cuyahoga Community College, with the idea of focusing on graphic design as an extension of her freelance writing career. However, classes in drawing and design – along with some excellent instructors – developed her interest in fine art. Using the giclee printing technology, Elaine is producing limited edition prints of her watercolors and acrylics, which include still-lifes, landscapes, abstracts, and figure paintings. Her original works are also for sale. Her work has been accepted in juried shows, most recently the 2008 Youngstown Women Artists show, in which she won a watercolor award for her painting Oasis.
Elaine's work is available at galleries throughout Cleveland. A 3-foot-by-5 foot print of her watercolor abstract The Orchestra Rehearsal was purchased by the Western Campus of Cuyahoga Commmunity College in spring 2005.
Elaine is a ballet dancer, choreographer and teacher. She was a principal dancer with North Coast Ballet Theatre, under the direction of Marguerite Duncan. Elaine's own work has appeared in choreographers’ showcases and she teaches ballet throughout the Cleveland area. This February she was privileged to perform in Panorama by the famous modern dance choreographer Martha Graham, at Case Western Reserve University. She has also performed works by Richard Dickenson, Kelli Sanford, Sernaz Demirel, and Sheau-Feng Luo.
Elaine holds a B.A.in speech communication from Case and has worked as both a broadcast and print journalist. She has written for publications such as Crain's Cleveland Business, Northern Ohio Live, and the Chagrin Valley Times. Elaine also received a Cleveland Emmy award for her work as producer of WVIZ-TV25's Medi-Scene.
