Human Being or Mythical Beast?

As the lead singer for The Doors, Jim Morrison was a world-famous rock star, a sex symbol, a poet, and eventually a cultural icon. He became famous or infamous for being inebriated and rebellious. When most people think of him they see an image like the one on this page by Joel Brodsky, the so-called “Young Lion” photograph. The truth is, as then Elektra Records president Jac Holzman remarked, “Jim looked like that for about 20 minutes.”

There is, of course, another side to Jim Morrison that most people don't know about. He was a gifted student (with an IQ of 149), a Cub Scout, an artist, a voracious reader and writer, an aspiring film-maker, and at times even a Southern gentleman.
