Ice-covered harbor entrance on Lake Erie

Walking on water

Where I stood to take this picture was right in the harbor entrance at Edgewater Yacht Club, as the Slow No Wake sign indicates.

The fact that a couple of fishermen were drilling a hole in the ice nearby gave me confidence that the ice was thick enough to walk on, but it still felt kind of strange when I thought about how deep the water might be beneath my feet (I can't swim).

The sun created a bright strip right at the horizon, and ice seemed to cover the lake as far as you could see. You could hear foghorns in the distance, kind of surprising given that the day seemed very clear.

Later on as I walked back to the car I saw a very bright boxy reflection on the horizon that could only have been a ship much farther out. Maybe an ice-breaker, or the last of the ore carriers?

Graffiti

Watched Graffiti Verite (Read the writing on the wall) today. This 1995 documentary video from Bryan World Productions is made up mostly of interviews with a dozen or more graffiti writers from LA. I'll post a quick video clip here at some point, but in the meantime I have to say how impressed I was by the many references to traditional artists in the conversations.

I wish my average design student was half as aware of his/her artistic influences as these guys (and one girl) were. Names mentioned included Picasso, Dali, Haring, the Fauves, and others.

Graffiti has interested me for years, including these examples I found of Swiss graffiti a few years back. If you want more, try the Art Crimes website.
