In 1954, he became the first continental European to be awarded the gold medal of the American Institute of the Graphic Arts; and in 1965 the City of Leipzig, on it’s 800th birthday, awarded him the Gutenburg Prize. In 1965, too, he was awarded the distinction in London of Honorary Royal Designer for Industry, an honour which he much valued. In 1966 he became a Corresponding Member of the German Academy of Arts in Berlin. ("Jan Tschichold: Master Typographer: His Life, Work and Legacy")
