Few have left deeper impressions on the typography of the last fifty years as Jan Tschichold. Although he only held a teaching position for 8 years during his youth, he continues to have an endless number of students. He cleared away the old typography of pre-1925 and made room for a modern, structured and regulated new typography.
Since there are no facts
on who invented and
when did modern typography
started, a lot of people
and experts believe that Jan
Tschichold was the founder
of modern typography. His
book in 1928 “Die neue
Typographie” was radically
new attitude to new typography
in printing. It rejected
decoration, it had to be
functional, it was new age
of expression and it was
simple and plain and pure,
it was universal. It was the
way printing had to be done
in the 20th century. It was
revolutionary.
