LA to SLO
As with Union Station in downtown LA, the Santa Ana Amtrak station has the grace and grandeur of the glory days of railroading. In our case it also had the advantage of being a much shorter, easier drive, and added only $8.50 to our ticket cost.

Yep, this is what you expect as you roll along the California coast. We didn't see many surfers, but had to endure the loud and seemingly endless stories of a gnarly dude a few seats back.
