Gray day
The drive east on the Shoreway was gray and rainy. A long line of red taillights stretched ahead, so I ducked off at East 55th, figuring that Carnegie Avenue would be less crowded.
At the end of the ramp was what looked like a scene from downtown Baghdad after the "shock and awe" bombing campaign.
I know that some might consider this a sign of progress—a long-abandoned Howard Johnson's motel being demolished to make way for development—but I couldn't shake the eerie feeling of being in a war zone. Insert your own economic destruction metaphor here.
