There's something wonderful about walking out to the garden and picking up a cantaloupe that looks like one you'd buy at the store, but tastes a whole lot better.
I was wondering how I'd know when to pick it. The skin turned from green to tan a few days ago, but how long should you wait after that change?
In this case the melon picked itself. It was resting quietly on the ground about an inch from the vine where it had been attached. I picked it up, still warm from the sun, and took it into the kitchen. Cut into soft, juicy chunks it made a great addition to breakfast. And it came from my backyard.
