Sunny day
Seems that every Spring there's a day when the sky is sparkling blue and it's just warm enough to make a visit to the Towpath Trail irresistible.
A last-minute change of plans gave me that opportunity today, and boy did I appreciate it.
I ran south along the canal, passing a gang (?) family (?) flock (?) of turtles sunning themselves on a log. What a life!
It was an absolutely perfect day for a run, aside from a slight headwind on the return. The perfect combination of warm sun and cool air felt great, a reminder that life can be good.
In the middle of this lovely run I found myself wondering if my complaining calf muscles could keep going for twice as long (a half marathon). Probably, but it wouldn't be fun.
How about a full marathon (26.2 mi.)? I doubt it.
Having fun yet?
You might think that after thirty years of fairly consistent running several times a week that a six-mile run on a beautiful day would be a total joy, but it doesn't work that way for me.
Every day, every run is something of a struggle. Some days I really don't want to get started. Other days I'm tempted to stop after 5-10 minutes. Some days various body parts (ankle, knee, toe) make me wince in pain for part of the way. Every day I think why isn't this easier?
But. At some point I fall into a rhythm, stop my inner whining and kinda, sorta enjoy the act of running. Today more than most. And always, afterwards I'm glad I got the physical workout.
So look out, turtles. I'll be back.
