Geeks, designers and techies from around the world gather in Austin, TX at South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive to learn, shmooze, and party with their peers. I was one of 30,000 who attended this year.
SXSW, Day 2
I asked Robert, my friendly Austin host, to recommend a nearby greasy spoon with good Huevos Rancheros. I walked a few blocks to Los Huaraches and would have kept on walking except that Robert had given it his enthusiastic endorsement.
The bars on the windows and door made it look a little intimidating, but inside it was warm and friendly. The food was cheap and good, the coffee decent.
Fortified with a plate of Huevos Migas I headed toward the Convention Center for a full day of talks and panels.
Hearing it mentioned at one session, I made my way to the LiveScribe booth to get one of their "smart pens" that saves a digital version of your notes and sketches along with audio, if you choose.
Seems pretty darn amazing but I haven't had time to really test it out yet. More on LiveScribe in the future.
For now let me share my frustration with the device at first. Damn thing didn't work. No matter what I tapped or touched there was no response. And drawing was a total bummer: it didn't leave any marks on the paper, so you had to imagine what you'd done.
Oops. It works way better when you take the cap off.
Lunchtime at the Convention Center was The Hoss: a bacon waffle cone with lettuce, guacamole, two beef taquitos and topped with pico de gallo.
Healthy, not so much. Tasty, though.
To prove that I did more than eat, here's a photo from a session on cool new stuff to do on your web page using CSS.
The guy using the iPad was not alone. My guess is that they nearly equaled laptops in number, and I'll bet that next year iPads will dominate. Why lug around a laptop when you can do must the same thing with a smaller, lighter device?
