Killed at Kent State, May 4, 1970
Young, weren't they?
If they were alive today these college students would have gray hair like me. Since they're not, but I am, I'm going to speak for them and ask that you think for a moment about an American tragedy that left four young students dead and nine others injured at Kent State University in 1970.
It's a complicated story that people still debate. As for me, there's never been any doubt that the shootings were unnecessary, a heavy-handed attempt by a frightened government to silence protesters. I'm not sure what, if anything, we've learned from it, but I'm damn sure we shouldn't forget these faces.
Could have been you, your kids, your grandkids.
