Viddy
A relatively new iPhone app, Viddy, brings all the good things about Instagram to the movies. The bad things too, like filters overkill and cat pictures.
First, here's what the developers say about Viddy: Capture life in the Moment. Viddy is a simple way for anyone to capture, beautify, and share amazing videos with the world.
Here's one of the first viddys I made (actually the 3rd, but more about that later):
What I like about Viddy:
- Short & sweet 15-second time limit. Bite-sized, a moment in time.
- Good user interface (mostly), easy to learn.
- Speedy processing of videos. Amazing, really, especially considering...
- Small but mostly interesting selection of special effects (FX) that you can apply to your video. A slider lets you adjust the intensity of the effect, very nice.
- Camera adjustments, like self-timer, focus lock, etc.
What I dislike:
- Buggy sharing/upload (I lost at least 4 viddys when the upload failed).
No way to save video on your phone, meaning when you forget to "Share" or the upload fails, your video is gone forever.Original videos ARE saved to your phone's Camera Roll, not the Viddy with FX applied.- Very inadequate "Help". Not much information available in "Knowledge Base".
- Wonky website: when I log in my profile shows "0" viddys, yet when I follow a link from an email where someone "Liked" one of my viddys, it shows "5".
- Justin Brieber loves Viddy.
But still
Like Twitter, this is a fun and possibly revolutionary new approach to taking and sharing video. The entry requirements are so low (free download for iPhone, Android coming soon) that anyone can do it. This guarantees a lot of "cute" pet pictures and other stupid, self-indulgent junk. But out of this huge heap of moving images are sure to emerge new ways of looking at the world.
Despite its problems, you should give Viddy a try.
