Ideas collide here
In this video Steven Johnson says "Chance favors the connected mind." Ideas don't reach their full potential until they collide with other ideas. You need a space for ideas to mingle:
- A coffeehouse
- A classroom?
With this video Johnson makes his point in four minutes. Now of course he is trying to sell you his latest book, Where Good Ideas Come From (and it's probably worth reading). You can watch his earlier, more detailed (18 min.) talk on the topic via TED Talks.
To me, this is a good explanation of why it may still be better to go to an actual class rather than taking all online courses. Even though I teach hybrid (partially online) classes, and I occasionally take on online course, there's a magic that can happen in the classroom that's unmatched online.
