Labor Day & Dad
Labor Day, for most Americans, is just a long weekend, easily confused with Memorial Day. Few of us appreciate that years ago union workers fought, and some died, to earn for us the 40-hour week, paid overtime, and other benefits we now enjoy.
I can't think about Labor Day without remembering my dad, who was literally a card-carrying union member until the day he died. I found his tattered UAW (United Auto Workers) card in his wallet.
Here in happier times (1962) he's enjoying the fruits of his labor in the garden on Heath Avenue.
RIP, Andrew B. Wasco, UAW Local 91, retired. You worked hard, never complained, and earned your rest.
