Going for a ride

When I was a kid a regular Sunday afternoon family activity was four of us piling into Dad's Chevy Bel Air and "going for a ride."

This meant spending an hour or two traveling outside of our Eastside Cleveland neighborhood into what we called "the country."

Some days we'd head east, maybe ending up on hilly Route 87. We might go south on Route 21 to Brecksville or west on Lake Avenue.

On a good day we'd stop for ice cream at a roadside stand, or rarely, for a burger at a drive-in. Most of the time it was back home for sandwiches.

So today felt a bit like that as Joanne and I piled into the Ford Focus for a drive to Peninsula, a neat little town in the heart of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We walked on the Towpath Trail for about a mile, stopped at the store run by park volunteers, and finished up with a drink and snack at the Winking Lizard.
