Aftermath
In the light of day the remains of the boarding house loom behind a simple memorial.
You can read more about the fire in yesterday's entry.
One of my neighbors made this sign and tied it to the fence. I probably wouldn't have thought of it myself (and feel ashamed about that) but I was deeply moved to see it.
People in the house typically lived on the edges of our society: down on their luck, going through tough times, struggling with mental illness, not hip young Ohio City types. Some, quite honestly, caused problems for others of us with their behavior.
For all of that, they didn't deserve to die in a fire that may have been deliberately set.
Rest in peace, neighbors.
