Really cold, really windy
The chimes hanging on the back deck haven't been quiet since late last night.
The wind's been blowing about 30 mph (gusting to 50) and the temperature has dropped throughout the day. It started in the 20s this morning and is 5 degrees (-15C) at 9 p.m. Brrr.
I decided to turn up the heat in my office instead of relying on the electric space heater only to discover that the controls for that part of the house (3 rooms with their own thermostat) didn't work.
I rushed to Home Depot ten minutes before closing, bought a new thermostat and installed it. The first sign of a different problem was that I connected the two wires from the thermostat and still didn't get any heat. I finished hooking up the new thermostat anyway, but nothing changed.
I went to the boiler room and remembered that when Milt the heating guy was working on it last month he commented that one of the valves didn't seem to be doing anything. Since it controls heat to the (mostly unused) rooms we keep unheated in the winter, I forgot about it. Until tonight.
Now I'm hoping that by using our two electric heaters and keeping doors open to other rooms we'll be able to keep the pipes for our hot water heating system from freezing in those rooms. Nothing like a 5 degree night to give you something to think about.
