Drive 55
Got an email from the Sierra Club today—they're doing a campaign to get people to save gas by pledging to drive 55 or whatever the speed limit is.
I've been doing this for nearly a year, and I can tell you it works. Today I filled up my PT Cruiser's tank when I saw gas below $3.89—a bargain at $3.72—and when I figured my mileage it was a bit over 23 mpg. In the past when I drove 65+ on my 20 mile dailly commute (part city, part highway) the number was consistently 20 mpg.
So slowing down will definitely save you money. An added bonus is that your commute becomes more relaxed when you eliminate the constant jockeying for position to pass. I set my cruise control at 60-62 and calmly hang out in the right lane letting the crazies zoom by. Believe it or not, once in a while I even pass someone. But it's with a zen-like calm of letting it happen—or not. Comments on the Sierra Club blog show that I'm not the only one who enjoys literally getting out of the fast lane.
Try it. Join me in taking the pledge to Drive 55.
