On the beach, Indiana Dunes
We've done it many times before, but it's still wonderful. Driving between Cleveland and Chicago, about an hour east of Chicago there's a turnoff for Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. I'm always tempted, and when the weather and our time schedule permit, I swing off the interstate and head north to the lake. Here's why:
Lake Michigan is a jewel-like blue. Chicago appears on the horizon like the Emerald City. The sand is warm and you feel far away from the city.
What makes this all the more magical is that the beach is bracketed by a huge dirty steel mill to the west and a power plant to the east. In this Google Maps view you can see them at each end.
The wind was strong, whipping a continuous shower of sand against us as we lay there in the sun. I dozed for awhile, waking to think that if we stayed long enough the sand would turn us into another dune on the beach. We drove back to Cleveland instead.
