Heirloom tomatoes
There was a great selection of heirloom tomatoes at the Lull Farm stand in Brookline, NH. Out of a dozen or more choices I picked five to try, mostly because of how they looked.
The bright yellow "Garden Peach" tomato actually has a slightly fuzzy skin, like a peach. The red and green "Zebras" and "Japanese Black" in the front just looked cool, and the big "Persimmon" was labeled as "King in Flavor of all organic tomatoes."
At supper I sliced them allon to a plate so we could compare the flavors, and I have to say I wasn't as happy as I expected. The green Zebra was probably my favorite for its tartness, and the Peach was tasty. But the Persimmon was disappointing. It may be time for the king to abdicate his throne.
Maybe it's because I've become used to a particular flavor that I connect with "tomato", and it's hard to appreciate subtle differences. Whatever the reason, I don't think I'd grow any of these for their flavor alone. Sure are pretty, though.
