Heading for the mountains
We left Ludwigsburg this morning and headed for Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, our starting point for several days in the Alps.
On our way to the train station we stopped at a small grocery store and bought apples, cherries, bread and beer to add to the chunks of cheese we'd bought earlier at the market.
This lunch on the train was better—and much cheaper—than anything we could have gotten onboard.
As we neared Interlaken on the train the view of the lake was beautiful. The Alps—our destination—loomed in the distance, our first view of them. We'd decided to go directly to Lauterbrunnen and spend the night there instead of Interlaken.
After changing trains several times we discovered that our Eurail pass didn't cover the last leg on the Berner Oberland-Bahnen, a regional train that took us from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen. The fare was less than ten Euro each, no problem.
We plan to spent the night in town, then head for the Mountain Hostel in Gimmelwald.
In Lauterbrunnen we had a dinner at the Hotel Jungfrau. Joanne had rösti—German hashbrowns that became a minor theme of our dining experience—and I ordered garlic cream soup in a bread bowl. Nice.
