Mürren to Salvan
For reasons that should be obvious from the picture, we hated to leave Room 31 at the Hotel Alpina with its top-floor wraparound balcony, but today we were going to our friend Jack's house in Salvan.
Before leaving Mürren we decided to hike the aptly-named Flower Trail. As beautiful as it was in July, the abundance of faded azaleas along the trail hinted at what it must have looked like earlier in the summer.
As is common in Switzerland, the trail led to a cable-car station. We rode down and took another train, cable car, and train about fifty miles southwest to Martigny. From there we boarded a "mountain train" up to Salvan. The video below shows part of the trip.
You can hear the wheels screeching on the rails as the train negotiates tight uphill turns.
From the train window we watched a huge wind turbine slowly spinning, taking advantage of the wind in the river valley. We arrived in Salvan in late afternoon, time enough for a stroll through town, then supper and a fairly early bedtime.
